Star fruit, my newfound favourite

Thanks to our new blender, I can now enjoy fresh juices frappé. Star fruit freshly picked from my MIL's farm is amazingly sweet and with a pinch of salt, it's absolutely refreshing.

Best part of it, it's packed with Vitamin C.

Abstinence from your favourite food

A while ago, FIL underwent a surgery for his prostate enlargement. The surgery went pretty well but follow-up sessions led to the discovery of kidney malfunction. At 74, FIL is disheartened that his health condition is taking somewhat of a downward spiral. As the family puts it, he's always fit and strong with no apparent health problems. The sudden role reversal had impacted him psychologically. In the meantime, everyone else is kinda in a frantic state. SIL went to the bookstores and grabbed a couple of books on healthcare for elderly, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, kidney disease etc. And so, FIL started reading on his condition and concluded that given his current health condition (i.e. high cholesterol level, high blood pressure, gout, kidney malfunction), he would have to avoid having lotsa food, leaving him with an incredibly limited choice, mainly greens, fruits and fish.

And so, the family is switching to dishes with super low sodium content. There are talks about FIL going vegetarian. Over dinner yesterday, I figured FIL was itching for some meat and he shyly requested to have a 2cm thin strip of bbq pork which kindda was the only savoury food on the dining table. Because of his health condition, he had given up (completely) on his Johnnie Walkers and now meat.

Abstinence is not new to me. I remember my dad blowing his top when he realized that his dinner included mushroom which was (according to him) a no-no for gout. But abstinence for an old man, who in any case would not live forever just like everyone else, sounds like a complete misery. I mean seriously, there is a difference between cutting down your intake of certain foods to completely not having them. But when this choice comes from the patient himself, then well, to each his own. But I know that if I lie sick on the bed and I ask for a slice of bread with peanut butter AND is refused, I will probably gather all the strength that I have and give you one tight slap.

Weekday nights of an aspiring SAHM

On Monday night, P went off after dinner to attend a wake. Alone at home, I decided to give our house a thorough clean. This is how marriage life (and moving out) has changed our lives!!!

My kitchen at its tiptop.

Tuesday night was P's turn to cook. Unpexpectedly, he managed to prepare a yummylicious pot of curry. I decided to try out some new recipes I have found on the web and found myself kept busy till 10.30 pm preparing our dessert.

Fruits of my labour, CHAR SIEW BAO! My very supportive husband finished all 4 in a go.

And with the left over dough, I started making custard buns! Frankly, the custard buns tasted horrible. The attempt to re-create 流沙奶皇包 failed. The filling hardened into some paste that tasted incredibly egg-ish.

I am thankful for having a husband who can stomach all kind of food and never say no to cleaning up the kitchen mess (at least for now)!

Post visit to Long neck Karen village

My mum has always been immensely intrigued by the Long neck Karen. I guess her curiosity grew from seeing and hearing so much about them on TV programmes. This is my folks 3rd trip to Chiangmai and seriously, I wasn't prepared to bring them to the Karen village myself. I have heard alot about these villages being set up like human zoo and I didn't want to be part of the viewing crowd. I have intended to sign my folks up to visit the Karens on a private day tour but as we were sightseeing last Sunday, we drove past a sign which read "Long neck Karen here". As we exited from the last sightseeing location, we took a turn and there we were, at a so-called village, which obviously was a set-up. We paid SGD 50 for all 4 of us (which could have cost us SGD 200 for a private tour for 2) and found ourselves in a so-called village.

Shops selling local handicrafts and hand woven scarves lined both sides of the narrow dirt road, which probably was 500 meters long. And each shop was tended by a Karen, mostly young teenage girls who could speak minimal Thai. My folks went forward, started staring at the rings around their necks and my dad being a highly inquisitive man, whipped out his camera, took some shots and started counting the number of rings of their necks. I began speaking to the girls and realized that due to unknown reason, some have more rings on their neck than there should be (which should have corresponded to their age). As I walked down the dirt road, I began to feel incredibly uneasy. Halfway, we saw a young girl, barely 12, working on her fabric and as she looked towards us, smiled. Not a welcoming smile, not a forceful smile. Not a smile which was meant as an encouragement for us to patronize her shop. Just a smile that looks somewhat empty. At that moment, I felt my eyes were welling up with tears. I bought some stuff from her, even though I knew that the money would very well be going to the operator. But there was nothing more I could have done.

As I walked out, I told P about how bad I am feeling to be part of the scam. I have participated in creating demand for this form of exploitation. P was fast in providing his comforts. His logic was maybe these girls were happier sitting and tending their stalls all day long, than to walk long distance just to get food and water supplies in where they originally came from.

I don't know. I just know life is not fair and it will never be.

Next destination, Taiwan

Not overly excited about it because it could have been a huge trip to Europe. Life is so not fair.

Nevermind.

Just read up on our hotel in Nantou and realized that our hotel is situated at the north peninsula of the Sun Moon Lake, and the private balcony opens up to a scenic view. Plus, every guest room is set up with a natural hot spring bathtub. This is a huge consolation for us. Other than that, we would be spending 4 days visiting somewhat familiar places.

And this is for me if I am lucky. Duty-free shopping is crappy in Taoyuan airport and I am keeping my fingers crossed that this jewel will be available in Suvarnabhumi. My dear Issey Miyake, see you in September!

I love mama in my house

Mdm is back at work after having a super long weekend. Thailand celebrated the Queen's birthday (aka Mother's Day) on Thursday and school was closed on Friday. My folks were here since Friday morning and we did a bit of visiting and touring over the weekend. P and I are glad to have them here as our first pair of stay-in guests. Having my mum around is a blessing. Being a natural homemaker and the clean freak as she is, she cleans up the house, does the washing and cooks, etc.

Mama is the answer to an immaculately clean and spotless house!

First time catching NDP in Chiangmai

It has been raining so frequently that the skies are in a constant shade of grey. I suspect this winter is going to be cold and I still can't decide yet if it is good or bad news for me.

Had my very first gathering with the rest of the Singaporeans in Chiangmai. Second time in my life sitting in front of the TV set and catching the parade live. It was surreal being in a room filled with Singaporeans and I was glad P and I made it to the party. The people were friendly and the atmosphere was very welcoming. I can't remember how long ago was it that I was in a room of complete strangers, introducing myself and making small talks. I was glad P enjoyed the session as much as I did.

Household joys and woes

P's Master chef inspired dish:

Butter pork

Since I came back from Singapore, it has been raining every single day. No thanks to our water heater (one sent for repair eons ago, another not ready to be used due to some uber technical reason), I have trouble showering everyday.

On most evenings, we will boil pots of water and pour it into our bath tub. But it still isn't easy, we have to shower really fast before the water loses heat. Yesterday, P decided to let me have the tub all to myself

Carrot cake with rice cooker

Tried this yummy carrot cake recipe I found this afternoon (http://www.shinshine.com/my-blog/2010/01/carrot-cake.html). My first time baking with our rice cooker!

Perfect nice shape

Thanks to P, the cake is gone in less than an hour!

Interaction with in-laws

Since we shifted out, my tuition classes with the kids couldn't be as flexible as before. Sometime back, P's sister and I reached a consensus that Wednesdays will be tuition nights. We got back to our old place last evening, had my classes, followed by dinner with everyone else. P's parents were there. Since my FIL's discharge, he had decided to spend more time in the city and not go back to their farm house as frequently as before. We left at about 8pm when P's parents were getting ready to turn in.

I am happy and appreciate this somewhat insulated kind of family intimacy that we are sharing right now. Having a family dinner then bidding our goodbyes feel so much like a grown-up's family life.
