And then he left

FIL passed away 2 days ago. Although he had once puzzled me with the restrictions imposed on my choice of clothing, I have otherwise had an amicable time with him. He was a man who deserved a lot of respect. If Nok is like his father, he would be a very influential and successful business person.

And now with the head of the family gone, everyone is busying themselves preparing for the funeral. Business is not giving way for time to grieve at this moment. I know things will be okay for P, who is taking things well since his dad had not been in good shape for a long time now. Nok had seen death as an inevitable relief for his father. I hope mum and SIL will be too, but it would be very hard for the two ladies of the family whose lives have been always dependent on him.

As I am experiencing another death, one closer to me than the other, I started truly feeling how fast I am ageing (yes, ageing). Life is not just too short to be wasted, life is also too short to be too careful about. Let your instincts lead the way and experience whatever that comes.

On Tommy Koh's "What Singapore can learn from Europe"

I like the piece "What Singapore can learn from Europe" By Tommy Koh, and I have written about what we can learn from the Scandinavians last November, which I have largely touched on the welfare and benefits that led to the upturn of fertility rate in the Scandinavia, which Prof. Tommy Koh must have tactfully avoided because the issue of "welfare" is in itself an issue of debate. In fact, the route he took was that of adequacy of quality childcare, work-life balance, the education system and male chauvinism.

Stop telling us that immigration is the one and only solution to the possible loss of competition for an ageing Singapore (and the extinction of Singaporeans in another hundreds of years). Immigration has to be balanced with an increase in fertility rate, or else it's an endless road. There is really much more than immigration. The government has to decide if investment in increasing fertility rate is worth the dilution of patriotism and the increasing divide of the population.

I love my job!

Developed the habit of striking days off the calendar since my awfully unbearable job in Singapore. Sign that things are getting much better? Habit of striking off calendar stopped since April.

Home is where the heart is

Spent a short 30 hours back at home before flying off to BKK. Short but enough to get my spirits up after a week away. Especially when the living condition in India was bad, getting back to some normalcy regulates the soul. I am glad that after being away from home for a week in India, I managed to get home before leaving again. The trip to India is certainly going to stay memorable and has a lifelong ink. The trip to Agra, Delhi itself, the 5-day course and of course the horrible hotel. Going home to familiarity makes me appreciate the presence of P and buddy in my life more than ever.

And now here I am in the city of angels, with a nice view of BKK from a humongous room but feeling a bit lonely. Looking forward to getting home this Saturday and spending some quality time with P and buddy.
